Search giant Google Doodle ArtWork paid tribute to Saleem’s painting style on Saturday. Her services were celebrated on the occasion of her long service to the art world. April 23 is significant because it is on this day that Salim’s work has spotlighted in UAE-based Barjeel Art Foundation collection of the works of female artists.
Her expertise depicts rural Iraqi women and peasant life through bold brush strokes and vivid colors. The Barzillai Art Foundation recognizes Najiha Salim in its 2022 Collection of Women Artists. She was born in 1927 in Turkey. Her parents are also artists. Her brother, Jawad, is considered one of Iraq’s most famous sculptors. From a young age, Salim began creating his own pieces.
She joined the Baghdad Fine Arts Institute to study painting. She got a distinction degree there. She was one of the first women to receive a scholarship to pursue her studies at the Ecole National Superior des Beaux – Arts in Paris. She specializes in fresco and mural painting in Paris.
After completing her graduation, she immersed herself in the arts and culture programs and spent many years abroad. After returning from Baghdad, she worked and taught at the Fine Arts Institute until her retirement.
She is one of the founding members of Al-Ruwad, a group of artists who incorporate European art techniques into Iraqi aesthetics. She was active in the Iraqi arts community. She worked for the development of the beginning of Iraq’s modern art movement.
