EID AL-ADHA 2022: Pronounced EED al-UHD-huh, Eid al-Adha is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Greater Eid. It is a major Islamic festival that takes place at the end of the Hajj.
Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca. It is the Fifth Pillar of Islam and therefore an important part of the Islamic faith. The Hajjis or pilgrims wear simple white clothes called lhram which promote the bonds of Islamic Brotherhood and sisterhood by showing that everyone is equal in the eyes of Allah.
Eid al-Adha 2022 commemorates when Allah appeared to Ibrahim (Abraham) in a dream and asked him to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience. As Ibrahim was about to do so, Allah stopped him and gave him a ram to kill instead. Muslims, remember this occasion through donating and gifting meat to the poor, needy, friends anda family. A version of the story also appears in the Torah and in the Bible’s Old Testament(Genesis 22).
During Eid al-Adha 2022 many Muslims attend Prayer services at a mosque. They also personally greet or send Eid cards to family members, and friends and give gifts to children. Many also Donate to charities that benefit the poor. Mosques or other groups may arrange communal meals where food is divided between family and friends.
Eid Al-Adha is the Festival of Sacrifice. A Sheep, cow, goat, buffalo or camel is sacrificed in the name of God. The meat from the Sacrifice is divided into three portions: a third for the family, a third to friends, and a third donated to the poor. it is customary for Muslims to mark the occasion by giving away gits, wearing new clothes, and visiting family and friends. Older family members usually give children money in Eid al-Adha 2022.
Eid Mubarak (Pronounced EED muh-BAR-ask) and Eid Saeed are common greetings used to offer best wishes during Eid al-Adha.
